There are a number of different ways to help students learn how to add. You almost always start by liken it to counting. Think of your starting addend (that is one of the two numbers you are adding together) as your starting number and the other addend as the amount that you need to count up from it. Once students have a handle on the counting strategy, look at it as a jump strategy to perform skip counting. Students also find it easier to count in chunks, ten is a popular chunk. Especially when you have three or more addends. These file folder games will give you the opportunity to practice these skills and become a much more effective adder.
File folder games just require you to print out all of these sheets and staple the directions page on the front of the folder. All remaining sheets go inside the folder. Directions: 1. Cut out all squares. Page 2 and 3 should be mounted in the folder. Pages 4 and 5 should be saved together. 2. Cut out How to Play and mount it outside folder. 3. We recommend laminating all pieces. This set can be an individual or group activity. Make it part of a math learning station, or divide your class into teams and have a relay challenge. They'll have so much fun, they won't even realize that they're learning at the same time! These pages are a set of addition problems and answer cards. Simply print and cut them out, and challenge your students to match the answers with the equations. Laminating is recommended to make the pieces last longer. Can be spread out on a table, or mount the equation cards on a bulletin board and use Velcro to stick the answers on.
