Part of the grade level readiness skills for both Preschool and Kindergarten has always been color recognition. These recognition skills then progress on to shapes and eventually letters. It all starts with colors though. That is an important step in child development and eventually helps them form a high level of descriptive language. Becoming expressive all begins with this seemingly simple skill. It definitely helps to have students experiment with paints and watercolors. They are amazed when you teach them how to create new colors from primary colors. A great way to teach them this is with food coloring and water. They do tend to go a bit overboard with the food coloring though. In this section we not only work on matching colors and patterns within them, but we present students with the words that correlate with colors. We also look at shapes and the concept of symmetry and we expand to looking at symmetry in everyday objects and items.
Your students will enjoy matching bright puppies, funky elephants, shape-filled fish, silly faces, and more! These games will teach color names, pattern recognition, association, and basic shapes. Similar to our other matching games, these cards can be placed in a folder for individual work station activity, or mounted on a bulletin board with Velcro tabs for team relays. As with all of our card games, we recommend laminating the individual pieces to help them last longer. Six different matching games will make the school day fly by! And if the kids accidentally learn something along the way, well that's okay, too.
