This is usually the jump off point for working with area. Students tend to get lost when they do not understand the concept that the measures we are working with and looking for here are measures of any adjacent sides. Where they go wrong is that they find the product of parallel sides and this is right where they get lost. Each of these worksheets has the rectangles encased in a coordinate grid. You can infer for each sheet that each square of the grid is a single square unit. Count the grid squares to determine the value of the height and width of each rectangle. Those are the values that you should focus on for this skill. Area of a rectangle is defined as the product of length and width. You will need to end of each of the problems with this in mind. The point of these worksheets is to find the area of various rectangles using the information provided about the lengths of their sides (the correct formulas have been provided).
These worksheets will introduce you to the skill and walk you through how to complete a problem. We also feature a review area for students that are having difficulty with this skill. These types of problems will help you the next time you take on a construction project this is where square footage comes into play.
