We often encourage students to draw out division problems to help make them more real and to help us plan a proper solution. Division is simply a form of sorting, when you think about it. We are just taken a total population which is the dividend and sorting that population into a fixed number of groups called the divisor. In most cases there will be an equal number of groups and other times there will be a few leftovers from the groups, these are the remainders. We will practice this process below. Please be sure to see everything available in this section.
These worksheets really help students to understand that division is simply sharing of a group and sometimes the group can share things evenly. On other occasions there are some leftovers that the group can't share. I like to encourage students to draw lines from the group to the individuals. This makes it very obvious as to how the bodies are broken. I bet you haven't seen worksheets like this before. Students will divide picture tokens according to the instructions. These worksheets explain how to perform simple division using pictures for visual representation. You will find introductory lessons that include step-by-step instructions for students.
