A fraction tells us that we do not have a whole unit of something instead we have part of it. Fractions are broken into equal parts of the whole unit. Fractions are composed of two values. The bottom value is called the denominator and tells us how many parts there is one whole unit. The top number is called the numerator and tells us how many parts of a whole unit that we have. If we have 4/6 of something it means that we are missing 2 parts to make it a whole unit. These worksheets assume that this is the first time students will see fractions. We present fractions as parts of a whole. We expect students to count all of available shapes and then the number of shapes that differ from the main population. We advance to providing students with a fraction and a group of images. Students are tasked with representing the fraction within the group of images. Students are also given the opportunity to explore mixed numbers for the first time. Your elementary students will have fun counting, coloring, and dividing groups of objects in order to determine fractional values. They will also learn what a fraction means, and how to write them.
These worksheets use visual representation to provide an introduction to understanding fractions. Students will plot points on a number line and match them to letters to solve each riddle. We have just over sixty worksheets and lessons in this section. If you scroll down, you will see the progression of the skill. The further you go down the page, the more advanced the skill.
