How do you multiply mixed numbers? There are two types of fractions, and these are proper fractions and improper fractions. Proper fractions are the ones where the numerator is smaller than the denominator. Improper fractions are those where the numerator is larger than the denominator, and the values of these fractions are greater than 1. Traditionally, we write fractions in the form; a⁄b but when it comes to improper fractions, there is another way to write them, and it is; C a⁄b. While adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing simply written fractions is easy, many students find it difficult to multiply two mixed numbers. Here is how you can multiply mixed numbers; Step 1: Change the mixed number into an improper fraction - The first step is to bring both fractions into improper fraction form. You can do that by multiplying the whole number C with the denominator b and then adding the product to a, the resulting number is then placed on the numerator's place. The denominator remains the same. Step 2: Simplify - Simplify both fractions and bring it into its reduced form. Step 3: Multiply - Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the numerator of the second fraction and repeat the same for the denominators. Step 4: Simplify - Simplify the answer to bring it into its reduced form.
We realize that multiplying mixed numbers is a difficult topic for many students. This stems from the fact that there are many tasks to complete with these problems. We attempt to ease students into this by practice finding the product of simple fractions and then building up to mixed numbers. We also start with like denominators. When you have unlike denominators, that a whole extra steps that gets added to the process. An interesting fact here is that anyone that works at a port uses this skill very often. It is all about having areas of the dock with the proper number of trailers per section. These worksheets explain how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers with both like and unlike denominators. Some answers may need to be converted and/or reduced.
