These activity sheets teach your students how to solve for variables in expressions of inequalities.

The power of inequalities is great to help us learn more about the world around us. The most important point to remember when you are creating an inequality from a word problem is to interpret the language correctly. There are tons of situations where you have a rate of set limit and those are perfect for the structure of an inequality. For example if you purchase a prepaid phone that has a calling limit of 200 hours. You could use an inequality to determine the number of hours per day or month you could use the phone to make it last over a full year.

How Are Inequalities Used in the Real World? There are expressions, combinations of variables, constants, and arithmetic operations. Then there are equations that include an equals-to sign along with constants, variables, and arithmetic operations. Another important part of mathematics is inequality. Inequalities are a combination of constants, variables, arithmetic operations, and inequality operations. These include “less than or equal to (≤)," “greater than or equal to (≥)," “less than (<)," and “greater than (>)." People believe equations are the most commonly used part of mathematics in real life, however, inequalities are used more frequently than the equations. Businesses, engineering firms, and calculus use inequalities more than equations. Control inventory, plan production lines, produce pricing models, and for shipping/warehousing goods and materials are all the processes where inequalities are used very frequently. Moreover, inequalities are also used in designing buildings and even rides in an amusement park. Other areas where these are used include the marine industry, healthcare, and many others. These worksheets explain how to solve for variables in expressions of inequalities. The problems that are presented will be related to real world situations to help students learn to generalize using this skill.
