These activity sheets will give your kindergarten students practice in identifying the concept of "above."

Teaching the concept of positions to a group students is often a difficult task. Some students will already have a solid understanding of abstract concept of relative position. Some students will only have one or two concepts in position. For example, I had this student in my class that clearly knew what the word below meant, but she was a little puzzled with what the position above meant. So, she would focus on the bottom object and completely negate the top object. Teaching children the concept of position or spatial concepts is always difficult. The best way to get started with this is to use real world objects. Balls and blocks are especially good for this. I like to have students follow directions with this. Tell them where to put the ball based on a position or spacing referring to the word we are working with. Students often come to Kindergarten understanding the concept of above, but many don't.

These worksheets and lessons will allow students to work pretty independently. Only your weaker readers will need help with some of the directions. Besides that, it should be a fun topic for them to just run with. This is a foundational skill for students that are struggling with the most basic forms of the concept. For students that have some success here we have developed a set of Understanding an Object's Positionand the concept of Relative Position worksheets. Your students will use these worksheets to learn about the concept of "above." Activities consist of simple pictures that students must color according to the directions. Crayons or colored pencils are required.
