The following activity sheets will give your students practice in reading simple dial gauge measurements.

How Do You Read Dial Gauges? Dial indicators or gauges are those measurement instruments that consist of a pointer that moves based on the type of dial they are measuring. In other words, the dial indicators measure in small increments, so it's essential to know how to evaluate them correctly. These dial gauges are one of the first-choice measuring tools used in engine building. However, understanding how to do them requires some effort. Let us discuss how you can perform measurements in these dial gauges. The first step is to spindle against the item you want to measure. Make sure that the base of the spindle is with the item accurately. Push the dial indicator against it and count the number of revolutions. The next step is to count the marks displaced on the small gauge. Please note that if the indicator doesn't make even a single revolution, then skip to the large gauge alone. Calculate the measurements; i.e., if your small gauge shows revolutions, then note them and then move to the large dial. Now, count the marks displayed on the large gauge. If the dial made a revolution beforehand, then don't forget to add that calculation as well. The last step is to calculate the measurement and divide it by 1000. Make sure you add the previous calculation as well.

There are so many pieces of equipment and tools that we use to monitor the health of through the use of dials and gauges. These gauges constantly must be calibrated to make sure they properly measuring what they are supposed to. When reading these dials it is important to know what units of measure they are in. You start by identify the zero value point of the dial and then count each notch of the dial to find the measure. Your students will use these worksheets to practice reading dial gauge measurements. Scales are presented as tic marks between whole numbers, and answers will include decimals. No specific measurement unit is necessary.
