Gallon Man is a creative way to help students understand liquid units of measurement. It helps students learn how to easily understand the relationship shared by these measures and convert between volumes of gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and our chart will help you move to ounces as well. The main body structure is composed of a single gallon. This body breaks down into four units (quarts) that are represented by the arms and legs. Each of these appendages are then converted to hands and feet that consist of two pints (one quart = two pints). The hands and feet then extend into fingers and toes that are represented by four cups (two pints = four cups). Sometimes students will be a little tricked by this because they think it should have five fingers and toes, just like them. Just remind students that gallon man is not human. He is more of a halfling; part homo sapien, part mathosapien.
Our writers had a bit of fun preparing these for you. We provided you with three different versions of gallon man. One with an alien like head shape, a sporty version for those student athletes in your class, and good ole’ happy gallon man. A prompted version is available to help students put together their own model and to remind them of the capacity units of measurement. We provided a completely blank version so your students can be free to create their own prototype and label all the units on their own. At the bottom of this page, you find a postable chart of all the units. On that version we also include ounces to take it a step forward.
