Since the beginning of time we have been using different methods to measure time change. It all started with the sun dial that relied on the sun. This was not a very reliable tool for time measurement because if it were cloudy or night time, it was useless. The hourglass came into existence and we had a reliable means to measure elapsed time. In the 14th century we saw the first mechanical clock followed the next century by the pendulum clock. Measuring weight has always been essential for trade. Over course of history every local trader used a slight different method. This was until the very late 18th century when the metric system first appeared.
