Students at this level are asked to have a greater stretch of the imagination with their reading and vocabulary memory. Students want to know how a prefix works and what it does to modify the action or meaning of a word. This is also the first time students come across homophones. Curiosity is at an all time high at this age because creative side of the brain and mechanical side of the brain are finally kicking in at the same time. By grade 3 we start to begin to expect students to be able to use context clues to determine the meaning of words that they do not know, but it is also still imperative that there are words that they just know from sight. Grade 3 is where is encourage students to start building their synonym libraries this starts at the context level but could always include the use of thesauruses and or a dictionary. 3rd grade is the year when students first have to have reading recall and the concept of comprehension really gets going. These word walls lead students towards this skill and gives them a breadth of help for recall.
